Senior Rust Engineer | Version Control Systems | Open Source Infrastructure

We are looking for an experienced Rust Engineer to join a high-impact engineering initiative focused on the future of developer tooling, large-scale version control systems, and AI-assisted software development.

This role offers the opportunity to contribute to open-source technologies that are enabling next-generation development workflows across large repositories, distributed teams, and automated agent-based environments.

You will work on challenging systems-level engineering problems spanning source control, distributed systems, cloud-backed repositories, virtual file systems, performance optimisation, and developer experience.

What You'll Be Working On

Extending and enhancing the version control ecosystem

Contributing to gitoxide and Git compatibility initiatives

Building cloud-native repository backends designed for enterprise-scale development

Developing high-performance storage, caching, and virtual filesystem solutions

Improving support for large repositories and distributed workflows

Designing extensibility frameworks, APIs, and plugin architectures

Enhancing developer tooling for AI-assisted and automated software engineering workflows

Collaborating directly with open-source maintainers and upstream communities

What We're Looking For

Essential

Strong commercial experience with Rust

Deep understanding of Git and modern version control concepts

Experience building developer tools, infrastructure platforms, SDKs, CLIs, or systems software

Strong knowledge of software architecture and distributed systems

Experience contributing to open-source projects

Track record of delivering high-quality production software

Highly Desirable

Experience with Git internals, source control systems, or repository storage technologies

Contributions to projects such as Git, gitoxide, JGit, Mercurial, or similar tooling

Knowledge of packfiles, commit graphs, refs, reftables, partial clone, or repository performance optimisation

Experience with storage engines, filesystems, caching layers, or large-scale infrastructure

Familiarity with gRPC, distributed services, authentication systems, and cloud platforms

Open-source maintainer experience or a strong public GitHub profile

We are especially interested in engineers who actively contribute to open-source communities and enjoy working on technically demanding problems that have a broad impact across the software engineering ecosystem.

Why Join?

Work on cutting-edge developer infrastructure

Contribute directly to widely-used open-source projects

Help shape the future of AI-enabled software development

Solve complex technical challenges at the intersection of version control, cloud infrastructure, and developer productivity

Collaborate with recognised experts in the open-source ecosystem

If you have a passion for Rust, developer tooling, distributed systems, and open-source software, we'd love to hear from you
